San Diego quartet BirdBath have released one of the year’s most promising debuts with their EP Looking Back at You // Looking Back at Me. This cassette release recalls the ‘80s jangle pop in the vein of Cleaners from Venus and the Go-Betweens that’s sorely missed in today’s independent music landscape, while offering plenty of sonic variety thanks to a trio of songwriters who evenly split the six tracks here. Songs like “Hurried Love,” with its indelible, siren-like guitar hook is an exquisitely-crafted piece of power pop, while “Sympathetic Magic” comes off like a lo-fi rendition of a great, lost Cars song. It’s a memorable selection of pop songs that’s as textured as it is tuneful.
